‘What’ To Clean in An Air System
One of the most important components in your home, especially in the winter, is the air system. The air system, which comes in the form of your furnace and central-air system, keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Without these systems, our homes would be quite uncomfortable.
As with any component in our home, it is important to make sure that they are maintained, inspected and cleaned on a regular basis.
Naturally, you will want a professional to handle anything to do with your air system. NADCA is an organization of air duct and air system professionals who have committed to providing the best service to their customers. They have also signed the NADCA Code of Ethics, ensuring that you only get professionals who will do the job on-time, on-budget and in the correct manner.
If you need to get your air system cleaned, you may be wondering what parts of the system need to be cleaned.
Here are some of the components, and why they need to be cleaned.
On any system that transports air, especially a furnace, there will be a filter. The filter prevents particles and hair from getting into the furnace and causing major problems. Typically, the filter is located where the air comes in. If the filter is dirty, or clogged, the furnace needs to use a lot more energy to bring the air in. Think of when you are drinking a thick milkshake. It is not easy to suck the milkshake up the straw because of how thick it is. The same principle works with a dirty filter and a furnace. The more your furnace works to bring in air, the more money you are paying each month for your energy.
TIP: You should change or clean your filter at least once a year.
Often forgotten when it comes to air system cleaning are the air ducts. The air ducts transport air from the furnace or central air to the rest of your home. It is much harder for the air ducts to get clogged than it is for the filter, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have them inspected and cleaned. If your home is humid, mold can grow in the air ducts.
If you have pets, a lot of dander can get in those ducts and if you live in a dusty area, a lot of dust can get in the ducts. Why is that a problem? Every time the system comes on, all that dust and dander blows into the air around you. For anyone with allergies or breathing problems, that can cause a lot of aggravation of the lungs, sinuses and more. Keeping ducts clean will prevent that from happening.
TIP: Have your air ducts cleaned at least once every five years.
Having a clean filter and clean air ducts keeps your system running smoothly, keeps your energy costs down and keeps your home from becoming a nightmare for anyone with allergies, asthma or other breathing problems.
