What is a Ductless Air Conditioner?

Ductless AC units can also be a good choice for room additions and small apartments, where extending or installing distribution duct work is not practical.

Similar to central air conditioning systems, ductless mini split air conditioners have two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser, and an indoor air-handling unit. A conduit, which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain, links the outdoor and indoor units.

There are several choices in the configuration of the indoor units, including ceiling mounts, or very small air handling units that can be ducted to other areas. Up to 4 individual indoor units can be installed with one outdoor unit.

Things to Consider When Buying an Air Conditioner

The main advantages of ductless mini-split air conditioning and heat pump units are their compact size and versatility for zoning or heating and cooling individual rooms. Many mini-split models can have as many as four indoor air handling units connected to one outdoor unit, known as a heat pump.

Since each of the ductless zones will have its own thermostat, you only need to air condition or heat when someone is there, thus saving energy and money.

Ductless mini-split air conditioning systems are also often easier to install than other types of air conditioning systems. If necessary, you can locate the outdoor unit up to 100 feet from the indoor evaporator making it possible to provide air conditioning to rooms on the front side of a building or house. In addition, indoor and outdoor units are as quiet as 50-dB; barely audible under most circumstances.

In comparison to other add-on systems, ductless mini-split air conditioning and heat pump options offer more flexibility as well as superior control over smaller areas. The indoor air handlers can be suspended from a ceiling, mounted flush into a drop ceiling, or hung on a wall. Floor-standing models are also available, as well as small air handlers which can run limited ducting to other areas.

A Ductless AC system is very similar to a Central AC system but meant for smaller areas. This type of Air Conditioner consists of separate indoor and outdoor sections. The indoor section is a wall or ceiling mounted fixture.

The outdoor section contains the compressor and the main operational components. The two sections are joined by refrigerant lines which circulate the refrigerant between the indoor coil to the refrigeration components in the outdoor section. The indoor air conditioning coil is cold, which causes the humidity to condense and be drained away while also cooling the air.
