If the relative humidity in the home is over 70%, materials containing carbon may absorb enough moisture to support microbial growth. Dust mites can survive in conditions over 50% relative humidity. Reducing humidity in the home is the single most effective control for dust mites; they thrive in moist air. People are most comfortable in a relative humidity range between 35% and 55%. For homeowner comfort levels of 40% to 60% are generally recommended, although a range of 40% to 50% is ideal to prevent biological growth.

In Winter, excess humidity may accumulate in tighter homes. Among the symptoms may be condensation on the windows. Other areas may become moldy or a musty mildew odor may be present.
