Gas Furnaces - Economical Home Comfort
Gas and oil furnaces are rated by what is called AFUE which stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. This number, a percentage, tells you how much heat from the fuel used is captures to heat your home and how much is lost out the chimney, venting system. The higher the AFUE percentage rating, the greater the efficiency. If a furnace has a rating of 80%, the furnace converts 80% of the fuel that you supply to heat and 20% is lost out the chimney. Older furnaces waste as much as 50% of the heat produced, and therefore, every energy dollar, although many furnaces in operation today are 60-80% efficient. The trend has been to replace these relatively inefficient furnaces with Condensing Gas Furnaces. In fact, as of January 2010, the new minimum efficiency standard requires that furnaces have a minimum AFUE of 90%. The most efficient furnaces in the industry, Lennox Condensing Gas Furnaces, reach AFUE efficiency ratings over 98%.
